abstract The invention describes the formation of protein-catalyzed, double-stranded duplex linear probe / target DNA complexes which are stable by virtue of their resistance to deproteinization. The invention also describes the uses of this stable probe / target complex in DNA diagnostic / detection systems during DNA hybridization reactions in vitro and in situ. These probe / target complexes are also applicable as diagnostic means in DNA amplification reactions stimulated by the RecA protein.
