This invention relates to a hydrophilic, non-viscous adhesive gel comprising an aqueous mixture of a water-soluble polymer which is crosslinkable by radiation, at least one wetting agent which effectively improves the moisture retention characteristics of the gel and which inhibits crosslinking of the gel. polymer soluble in water by radiation energy, a pharmaceutically active agent, as well as a crosslinking promoter effectively canceling the inhibiting effect, with respect to crosslinking, of the humidifying agent. The aqueous mixture is exposed to radiation energy to produce a homogeneous, cohesive, adhesive and non-viscous hydrophilic gel with extended useful life. These gels can be produced in the form of patches for the long-term administration of the pharmaceutically active agent to a patient. |
