abstract Compounds corresponding to the formula XAY, in which X and Y represent groups capable of intercalating DNA, and comprise fused bi or polycyclic, carboxylic or heterocyclic ring systems at least in part aromatic and optionally substituted, having a almost flat conformation. A represents a substantially rigid divalent group, extended so that X and Y are separated and are at a substantially fixed distance from each other such that X and Y are likely to intercalate different DNA duplexes . Potential applications of these compounds include their use as antitumor or antiviral agents.
