titleOfInvention Lateral biopsy device
abstract A lateral biopsy device (10) is described for taking tissue samples from the body of a patient without damage. The biopsy device (10) includes an elongated flexible catheter (11) having an annular cutting edge (23) at its distal end. An elongated flexible shaft (12), slightly longer than the catheter, is placed inside the central lumen of the catheter (11). A cone (14) having a rounded outer tip (25) is securely attached to the distal end of the shaft (12). The cone includes an annular surface (24) contacting the annular cutting edge (23) of the catheter (1) when the shaft (12) is retracted from the catheter. A gripping element (13) fixed to the proximal end of the shaft (12) allows the operator to advance and retract the cone (14) relative to the annular cutting edge (23) in order to take a sample of fabric located in the in-between.
