A method of directed chemical modification of peptides and proteins is described, this method comprising the following two stages: (a) the selective oxidation of a fraction of 2-hydroxyethylamine, -CH (NH2) -CH (OH) -, in the peptide or protein to produce an aldehyde, and (b) reacting the new aldehyde with a second reagent to form a product in which the natural biological characteristics of the peptide are enhanced by useful new characteristics transmitted by the second reagent. In addition, the invention relates to certain types of specified products obtained by the above process. |
