titleOfInvention Non-contaminating probe
abstract A non-contaminating catheter consists of a generally hollow tube (12) having an axial lumen extending along the length of said tube, and an elongated tubular elastic membrane (14) disposed within the lumen. When the catheter is inserted into a patient's organ, the membrane (14) is pulled into the tube and exits at the front edge of the tube. Once the catheter is fully inserted, the membrane wraps around the tube; in this way, contact between the tube and the patient is practically, if not totally, avoided during insertion of the catheter. More specifically, the membrane spreads as the catheter is pushed along the anatomical canal, and thus remains interposed between the outer wall of the catheter and the patient's internal organs (e.g., the urethra). Sliding friction contact between the catheter tube and the lining of the urethra is prevented and passive transport of pathogens in the lower urinary tract is simultaneously avoided.
