titleOfInvention | SENSOR OF HALOGENATED COMPOUNDS. |
abstract | A highly sensitive and selective sensor for the detection of halogenated compounds comprises a bead (16) of sodium lanthanun fluoride silicate, having the molecular formula NaLa4(SiO4)3F, in which are embedded two noble metal electrodes (12, 14) preferably a straight platinum wire (12) near the center and a helical platinum wire (14) near the periphery of the bead. The two ends (13, 15) of the helix (14) and one end (17) of straight wire (12) are connected to pins (13', 15', 17') of a three-pin miniature transistor socket (18). Bead (16) is enclosed within a chamber (20) having an air inlet (22) and an air outlet (24). A current passing through the helical wire (14) maintains the sensor temperature at about 500 C by resistive heating. A decrease in the resistance between the two wires is an indication of the presence of a halogenated compound in the sample of air to which the bead is exposed. |
