abstract A composition for producing an essentially biodegradable foam to be applied to a substrate is described to form a barrier between the substrate and the atmosphere. The composition is formulated from a mixture of water and sodium sulfonate, a carboxylic acid, KOH, potassium silicate, a nonionic, solid, organic material, soluble in water and of a hydroxylic solvent for the potassium salt of the carboxylic acid, this in certain proportions. The composition can be produced, transported, stored and handled in the form of a concentrate. These compositions can also be used in the preparation of a foam barrier, which has a particular utility in the sanitation of landfills, in order to stop odors and prevent access to insects.
