abstract The invention relates to the use of methyl hydroxyalkyl cellulose mixed ether, in particular methyl hydroxypropyl cellulose ether (MHPC) and methyl hydroxyethyl hydroxypropyl cellulose ether (MHEHPC), which are soluble in organic solvents as evaporation retarders or thickeners for paint strippers, with a reduced overall degree of substitution compared to the prior art. The degree of substitution by methyl groups is 1.6 to 2.5, in particular 1.8 to 2.4, that by hydroxyalkyl, in particular hydroxypropyl groups is <0.7, especially <0.6, in particular <0.3.
