titleOfInvention | CHEMICAL TREATMENT COMPOSITION FOR GLASS FIBERS HAVING EMULSIFIED EPOXIDE WITH GOOD STABILITY, AND GLASS FIBERS THUS TREATED. |
abstract | A simplified aqueous priming composition using a variety of components provides improved characteristics of stability, wettability and strength. The composition uses one or more aqueous film-forming polymers of the bisphenol A type, soluble, dispersible or emulsifiable with a film-forming copolymer containing an epoxide and compatible with the matrix polymer and soluble in the latter. One or more organosilane coupling agents are also used. The sizing composition preferably comprises a single nonionic surfactant in combination with the amide cationic polyamine lubricant. One or more antistatic agents, generally cationic organic quaternary ammonium salts having one or more alkoxy moieties, are used in an effective antistatic amount. An anti-foaming agent can also be used to prevent or suppress foam during the mixing process. The improved stability and wettability characteristics of the aqueous sizing composition are obtained by preferably using a single epoxidized surfactant. Compositions formed from this surfactant are effective at half the level of the surfactant and keep their static emulsion stability for 48 h or more. This is accompanied by a 50% improvement in dry abrasion without any apparent negative effect on the mechanical properties of the glass fiber obtained. The figure shows the particle size of four sizing compositions, each having a different epoxy emulsion and a given amount of surfactants. |
