abstract | Process for the production of a lower alkyl vinyl ether / maleic anhydride polymer free from benzene and having a specific viscosity of between 1.0 and 5.5 approximately, which consists in premixing maleic anhydride and l vinyl alkyl ether in a molar ratio of between about 1: 1.1 and about 1: 2, in a mixture of co-solvents consisting of benzene substituted by lower alkyl, of a C6-8 alkane, of a saturated lower alkyl ether, with a lower alkyl vinyl ether as co-solvent, and reacting the monomer mixture transformed into a complex at elevated temperature and pressure and in continuous contact with a peroxide primer. The specific viscosity is controlled by adjusting the amount of lower alkyl vinyl ether in the co-solvent mixture. The polymer product is recovered from the slurry obtained by drying under vacuum. |
