abstract Gas coning or fingering from a gas cap in an oil-producing well is reduced by injecting a polymerizable material into the gas cap such that it polymerizes to form a substantially impermeable zone or layer above the oil-bearing formation to prevent gas from flowing into the oil well during production. The polymerizable material can be injected as a gas, e.g. it can be ethylene oxide, propylene oxide or 1,3-butadiene.
