A water-based ink composition containing heat-crosslinkable polymers using the resulting cross-linked deposit to produce a continuous matrix that is resistant to acidic fountain solution from an offset printing process. The crosslinked composition comprises a first polymer containing a cyclic anhydride or its derivative and a second polymer containing hydroxyl functionality. The cyclic anhydride can be styrene maleic anhydride or a derivative thereof, or methyl vinyl ether / maleic anhydride or a derivative thereof. The second, hydroxyl-containing polymer can be a polyethylene or polypropylene glycol, a hydroxylalkylated polyethyleneimine, a polyvinyl alcohol, or the hydroxyl-containing polymer can be an acrylic polymer which comprises at least one hydroxyl-substituted acrylate or methacrylate monomer and an acrylic acid or methacrylic acid monomer. |
