abstract Modified hemoglobin comprising hemoglobin crosslinked by means of a crosslinking reagent comprising an aromatic or aliphatic derivative acyl material having at least two anionic labile groups each of which is close to an electrophilic group. This agent provides crosslinking between the beta chains within the 2,3-diphosphoglycerate binding site, the bonding distance between the beta chains being approximately 5 to 9 angstroms. A method of preparing the modified hemoglobin, as well as its use as a blood substitute or plasma substitute, is also described.
