abstract A pyrotechnic grain or body (1) of a gas generant n(2) having a consolidated or pressed-on, particulate inert nburn inhibitor layer (3) thereon. The inhibitor may be a nmetal oxide such as iron oxide, metal sulfide, such as nmolybdenum disulfide, silica, silicate compound or mixtures nthereof. The preferred inhibitor is a silicate compound, nmost preferably bentonite. The inhibitor layer (3) most npreferably covers only one face or side of the generant nbody, though it may cover both faces or less than the nentire area of one or both faces. The generant may be any nconventional formulation which generates nitrogen-containing ngas, preferably an azide, and most preferably nsodium azide. The generant body may be any shape, npreferably a washer-shaped disc. An automotive gas bag ninflator may contain a plurality of the composite, ninhibited generant bodies, preferably a stack or side by nside assembly of such composite, inhibited wafers.
