Described is a process for regenerating a used HX liquid alkylation catalyst, wherein X is a halogen, which utilizes a reversible base selected from polyvinylpyridine, amine-substituted styrene divinylbenzene copolymers and mixtures thereof, as a contact material for removing a portion of a contaminating amount of acid soluble oil, ASO, produced as by-product of the alkylation reaction and contained in a liquid catalyst mixture of a sulfone component and a hydrogen halide. The treated sulfone-containing mixture can further be processed by contacting it with an adsorbent material. |
