abstract The synthesis of lignin by plants is regulated by the transformation of the plant's genone with a recombinant gene structure containing the gene specifying a critical enzyme against the synthesis of a lignin precursor, said gene possibly being in a non-coding orientation of so that it is transcribed into mRNA having a sequence complementary to the equivalent mRNA transcribed from the endogenous gene, this having the effect of suppressing the synthesis of lignin. If the recombinant gene has the lignin enzyme gene in a normal, or "encoded" orientation, increased production of the enzyme may occur if the insert represents DNA throughout its length, but deletion may occur if you only use a partial sequence.
