A waste gas that is contaminated with an automotive exhaust gas and other emissions and which contains nitrogen oxides, a carbon-containing powder and low concentration of sulfur oxides can be purified by a method which comprises adding ammonia to said waste gas, exposing said gas to an ionizing radiation and thereafter removing the resulting dust and/or mist and carbon with a wet electrostatic precipitator. If necessary, the gas may be passed through a layer of activated carbon based filler to decompose the ozone that was generated by exposure to the ionizing radiation or by electrification with the wet electrostatic precipitator. |
