abstract The present invention relates to a liquid crystal composite layer of polymer dispersion type in whichn (a) a liquid crystal material comprising compounds selected from the group consisting of compounds represented by the following chemical formula (1) and compounds represented by the following chemical formula (2) is dispersed in (b) a matrix polymer;n n whereinn A₁ and A₂ represented respectively a benzene ring, cyclohexane ring, pyrimidine ring or trans-1,3-dioxane ring; X₁, X₂,X₃, X₄, X₅ and X₆ represent respectively H, F or Cl; Z₁ and Z₂ represent respectively a single bond, -CH₂-, -CH₂CH₂-, -CH=CH-, -C≡C-, -COO- or -OCO-; Q represents a single bond, -CH₂-, -CH₂CH₂-, -CF₂-, OCF₂-, -C₂F₄-, -CCl₂- or -C₂Cl₄-; Y represents H, F or Cl; R represents -C n H 2n+1 -,-C n H 2n+1 O-, -C n H 2n+1 CH=CH- (in which n represents an integer of 2-10); m represents 0, 1 or 2;n n in which B and C represent respectively -C n H 2n+1 -, -C n H 2n+1 O-, -C n H 2n+1 -CH=CH- or -C n H 2n+1 -C 6 H 10 (in which n is the same as mentioned above, and L is H or F.
