abstract The present invention is to provide a liquid crystal monomeric compound where a liquid crystal phase readily appears, which is excellent in alignment control, film-formability, durability, heat-stability and compatibility, and is able to be applied to electro-optical liquid crystal elements and recording elements; and a side-chain liquid crystal polymer compound modified with such a monomeric compound. n The liquid crystal monomeric compound is represented by the following formula: n n        CH₂=CH-(CH₂) m -R   [1] n n n wherein m is an integer of 2 to 20 and R is a group selected from the group consisting ofn n wherein p is 1 or 2, Rf is CF₃ or C₂F₅, R¹ is an alkyl group having 3 - 18 carbon atoms, * means an optically active carbon atom, (A) and (B) each is a group independently selected from the group consisting ofn n which may be substituted with one or more halogen atoms, and X is -O-, -COO- or a direct linkage, andn n wherein p, Rf, R¹, (A), (B), X and * have the same meanings as above.
