abstract An electroviscous fluid containing an antioxidant and/or a metal corrosion inhibitor or solid particles as a dispersoid in an electrically insulating fluid as a dispersion medium consisting principally of a liquid crystal substance, particularly a nematic liquid crystal substance exhibiting positive dielectric anisotropy or a ferrodielectric liquid crystal substance. This fluid can be used for vibration control machinery such as variable damping dampers, engine mounts, bearing dampers, clutches, valves, shock absorbers, precision equipment, acoustic instruments, etc., and for display applications. It has a high electroviscous effect, a wide temperature range of application, and a stable electroviscous effect.
