titleOfInvention Method for dividing normalized operands
abstract In each division step, according to a two-bit lookahead non-restoring division method, an unabridged partial remainder (PR) is formed over the entire operand length by an add / subtract circuit (CLAD) with predictive carry determination. This results in an output carry (CYO) that does not take into account the k bit positions of the shortened operands (VE1 and VE2). In addition, with each division step of two further add / subtract circuits (CLA1 and CLA2) shortened partial remnants (VPR1 and VPR2) corresponding to the two possible carry values (CYI = 1 and CYI = 0) at the least significant bit position of the to be added or subtracted and operands (VE1 and VE2) shortened to k bit positions are determined. Depending on the results for the two shortened partial remnants (VPR1 and VPR2), two combinations of partial quotient (QU1 and QU2) and multiplication factor (VFF1 and VFF2) are provided for evaluation and of the two combinations provided (QU1, VFF1 and QU2, VFF2), depending on the output carry (CYO) provided during the addition or subtraction of the unabridged operands (E1 and E2), the associated combination (for example QU1, VFF1) is selected. The values for the respective partial quotas (QU1 or QU2) are determined using the signs (OS1 and S1 or OS2 and S2) of the previously determined partial remainder (PR) and the most recently determined shortened partial remainder (VPR1 or VPR2) in conjunction with the multiplication factor (VFF) on which the division step is based. The values for the respective multiplication factor (VFF1 or VFF2) result from the determined shortened partial remainder (VPR1 or VPR2) in connection with the shortened divisor (VDOR).
