titleOfInvention | Resistance welding electrode and process |
abstract | The invention relates to methods and electrodes for electrical resistance welding. The electrodes have a base part and an integral nose-shaped part projecting from the base part, this nose ending in the face of a welding tip. The nose has an internal taper between the base part and the face of the welding tip, this taper with concave profile forming a vertical surface pyramid trunk. The electrodes used can be made of a conventional copper material in which copper is combined with one or more metals chosen from the group comprising chromium, zyrconium, cadmium, cobalt, nickel, beryllium, tungsten, l aluminum, tungsten carbide, iron and molybdenum; or they can be made of pure copper. The electrodes can be used in a welding process which is characterized by a generally linear increase in the timing of the current with reduced or eliminated conditioning of the electrodes. The face of the welding tip has a convex curvature, the radius of curvature of which can range from two inches to eight inches, preferably four inches. Both male and female electrodes can be used with cooling recesses in the electrodes as well as an offset nose. The diameter of the face of the welding tip can be approximately equal to the length of the nose. |
