Compositions for reducing oxidative damage in an animal, comprising a modified superoxide dismutase, the modification consisting in substituting a first amino acid residue located between 3-12 Å from the active site of superoxide dismutase with a second amino acid residue capable of reacting with a highly reactive nitrifying species, such as the nitronium ion, produced from the reaction of peroxynitrite and superoxide dismutase. |
