titleOfInvention | Bacterial attenuation method and vaccine |
abstract | Methods are described for attenuating virulent Gram negative bacteria to obtain avirulent bacteria. These methods include passing the wild-type bacteria through phagocytic cells, such as macrophages or polymorphonuclear leukocytes, or through lysosomes derived from such cells, a sufficient number of times until the bacteria become avirulent towards animal host. These bacteria are preferably of the Enterobacteracea family and ideally of the genus Salmonellae. The invention also includes avirulent bacteria produced by these methods, pure cultures of these bacteria, and methods of using these bacteria, preferably in a vaccine for administration to an animal host for the purpose of inducing therein an immune response to Gram negative bacteria of wild phenotype. |
