abstract | Method and apparatus for orienting an amorphous plastic. The material is passed through a hole having a width less than the thickness of the plastic. During this movement, the material is oriented, during the formation of a transition zone (18) between a still unoriented (thicker) material (16b) and an oriented (thinner) material (16a). The material is moved at a speed which causes the crystallization energy released by the orientation to reach the outer surfaces (14, 17) of the plastic material at a time when the material is already in the state of reduced thickness. The apparatus includes a drawing ring (50) and a mandrel (60) between which a hole is formed. When the plastic material enters the hole, the hole has a width which corresponds substantially to the thickness of the amorphous material. The width of the hole is reduced in the direction of movement of the plastic material so as to be less than the thickness of the amorphous material, but greater than the thickness of the oriented material. |
