abstract |
This invention relates to a process for the production of α-hydroxy carboxylic compounds by reacting (a) a carbonyl compound having at least one hydroxyl group α- to the carbonyl function with (b)a hydroxy compound of the formula R³OH where in R³ is an alkyl group, an alkenyl group, a cycloalkyl group or an aryl group. The reaction is carried out at elevated temperatures in the presence of an ionizable transition metal compound supported on an ion-exchange resin as a heterogeneous catalyst. The process is useful for making e.g. lactate esters and lactic acid which are useful items of commerce as solvents and chemical intermediates. |
