titleOfInvention Transgenic plants with altered polyol content
abstract Transgenic plants have been produced which are developed to produce physiologically significant levels of sugar alcohols, or polyols, which originally were not produced by plants of said species. Transgenic plants have been developed to express a bacterial mannitol-1-P dehydrogenase, which in the reverse reaction in plant cells produces mannitol from fructose in a non-producing plant. origin, no mannitol. Polyol levels in plant cells have been associated with osmotic regulation and therefore tolerance of stress due to water. Transgenic plants have significant research value and it is surprising to note that they seem to exhibit increased growth rates as well as vigor, and tolerance of constraints. Another polyol-producing enzyme gene was isolated from a stress tolerant plant.
