abstract System used for image overlays and ensuring suitable image formats for image overlays. The system comprises a video memory (350, 356, 358) and a control circuit (300) for recording the information provided by a video signal in the video memory and for reading this information from the video memory, said information relating to video data. A read circuit (680) provides information from the video memory in synchronization with the display corresponding to another video signal. An interpolator (337) selectively compresses and decompresses the information read from the playback circuit, independent of any other vertical compression or decompression processing of this video data. A multiplexer (312) combines the video signals for simultaneous display. The reading circuit can include an asynchronous line memory for the information read from the video memory, it includes a recording door which can operate in synchronization with the reading of the video memory, as well as a reading door which can operate in synchronization with the display of the other video signal.
