abstract The invention provides oligonucleotide probes for detecting hepatitis C virus nucleic acids from the U.S., Japan, and HCV-C prototype strains, as well as oligonucleotide primers for amplifying such nucleic acids. The invention also provides methods and kits for amplifying and detecting said nucleic acids. The amplification methods preferably include the reverse transcription of the viral genomic RNA to create cDNA and the subsequent amplification of the cDNA by the polymerase chain reaction. Oligonucleotide probes can then be used to detect the presence of amplified DNA by hybridization. <IMAGE> <IMAGE>
