Compounds of formula (I): <CHEM> (wherein R represents a hydrogen atom or an acetyl group), which we have named "the adenophostins", and salts and esters thereof, have the ability to increase intracellular calcium ion concentrations by acting on the inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate (InsP3) receptors which exist in the endoplasmic reticulum, and can therefore be used for the treatment or prophylaxis of cerebral disorders. They can be prepared by cultivation of a microorganism of the genus Penicillium, e.g. Penicillium brevicompactum SANK 11991 (FERM BP-3499) or Penicillium brevicompactum SANK 12177 (FERM BP-3500). |
