abstract A method of removing a second ligand from a particle surface without substantially affecting the surface of the particle, comprising exposing the particle to a first ligand immobilized on a support which comprises exposing the particle under certain conditions and for a sufficient to allow the second ligand to desorb from the surface of the particle. The first ligand has an affinity for the second ligand that is at least two orders of magnitude greater than the affinity of the second ligand for the surface of the particle, so that the second ligand is removed from the surface of the particle without noticeably affect the surface of the particle.
