abstract What is provided herein is a method for preparing a product which comprises discrete microdroplets of an oil in water stabilized by in situ polymerization of a water-soluble vinyl monomer. The method comprises dispersing the oil in water, optionally with a surfactant, adding the water-soluble vinyl monomer, preferably vinylpyrrolidone, optionally with a comonomer, and polymerizing the monomer or comonomers in situ such that the oil is stabilized in the resulting polymer solution as discrete microdroplets. The product is used in conditioning hair care compositions and hair and skin care compositions, including those containing a water-soluble acryl comonomer.
