titleOfInvention | Process for the covalent surface modification of hydrophobic polymers and articles made therefrom |
abstract | The invention relates to the covalent modification of a hydrophobic polymer surface according to a process using the ends of functionalizable chains of the hydrophobic polymer. The process of the invention is suitably carried out under heterogeneous conditions, allowing the practitioner to take full advantage of the possibility of general treatment, of the resistance, and of other desirable characteristics of a hydrophobic polymer used in the production of 'a manufactured item. The invention is most advantageously applied to the modification of surfaces of microporous membranes, allowing the practitioner to choose from a wide range of macromolecular species of possible surfaces which can be covalently linked to the ends of chains of membrane polymers. The process of the invention takes place without significantly reducing the pore dimensions or the hydraulic permeability of the original unmodified membrane. This invention also relates to a four-component coating composition having surprising and useful thermal phase separation characteristics usable in a manufacturing process described herein. The invention further relates to a die assembly considerably improving the efficiency and the multiple possibilities of using said method. |
