Apparatus for measurement of burn depth in skin |
abstract |
A method makes it possible to distinguish a burn of the entire thickness of the skin from a burn of a partial thickness of the skin of a patient. According to these methods, a fluorescent compound excited by infrared light is administered to the patient so that the compound enters one or more capillaries located below and next to the skin burn. Then the compound is excited with infrared light and the amount of fluorescence of the compound caused by the infrared light and detected in the burn of the skin and in the unburned skin adjacent to the burn. The ratio between the fluorescence detected in the skin burn and in the unburned skin gives an indication of the thickness of the skin burn, for example, a ratio less than 0.4 indicates that the burn has affected the skin over its entire thickness. |
