abstract A method of detecting human immunodeficiency virus, comprising: seeding cuvettes with cells susceptible to infection by HIV; adding to these cuvettes a sample to be tested for HIV; incubating the cells, exposing the cells to a first antibody reagent with HIV proteins; exposing the cells to an antibody reagent conjugated to a label with the first antibody; examining the cuvettes with an appropriate microscope; and counting the number of foci of positive marked cells per cuvette to determine the number of infected cells in the cuvette. The method can be used to detect and quantify HIV infected cells, to monitor the effects of drug therapy on levels of HIV expression in AIDS patients, as well as to provide quantitative measurement of HIV expression in asymptomatic HIV antibody positive individuals.
