An isolated polypeptide comprising a substantially antigenic portion of at least one hepatitis A virus epitope, the polypeptide being free of infectious material. The polypeptide is the expression product of a DNA molecule that has been introduced into a virus, preferably vaccinia virus, using a recombinant DNA technique. This expression product, a recombinant virus containing the DNA molecule encoding it, can be introduced into a vaccine to immunize the carrier against the hepatitis A virus. |
