abstract A means for inducing unidirectional oscillation in monolithic and composite ring lasers in which the light path (ABC) is planar is disclosed. The intracavity optical diode which induces the unidirectional oscillation in the plane annular oscillator (100) is obtained by a combination of the non-reciprocal Faraday effect, a linear birefringence effect in which the main axes of the birefringence are not parallel and perpendicular to the plane of propagation of the annular light path (ABC), and one or more partial polarizing effects. The present invention allows for experimental optimization of the polarization transformations within the plane annular oscillator (100), even though the oscillator (100) is monolithic, and provides a means of tuning the frequency of the plane annular oscillator.
