abstract Particles in a fluid are counted by passing the fluid through an optical cell and projecting an image of said particles onto a row of charge-coupled devices so that the image surface of each particle is at the level of. said row is approximately equal to that of at least one of the load coupling devices. Signals from each of said devices are processed to obtain information about at least the number of particles that pass through the optical cell. A particle counter is described which comprises an optical cell (1) through which a fluid passes which contains the particles to be counted, a device (2) for illuminating the particles in the optical cell, and an optical device (3) for. imaging the particles on a row of charge-coupled devices (5) such that the image area of each particle at said row is approximately equal to the area of at least one of said devices. The particles may be fluorescent, and a transmission factor filter (4) may be provided.
