titleOfInvention | Prosthetic anterior cruciate ligament design |
abstract | An artificial ligament device (36) connects the ends of two bones (12, 14), one of the bones having an interior tunnel (32). The device comprises a multi-layered or tubular (35) woven ligament (35) with an intra-articular region (38), at least one angled region (40) and at least one terminal region (46), each region being woven. so as to possess qualities of flexibility and resistance appropriate to the types of stresses which it must undergo during its use. The terminal region and part of the angled region are enclosed in a polymeric bone block (8), normally by thermomolding, and the block is inserted into the bone tunnel in order to fix the ligament. The bone block is molded to have a fixed radius of curvature (60) for the ligament at the exit point, so as to limit the flexural stress applied to the ligament during flexion and extension of the joint. |
