The invention relates to the use of xanthines, optionally incorporated into liposomes, to promote pigmentation of the skin or hair. This xanthine has the formula (I), or a salt thereof, or a plant extract containing it, in which, in particular, R3 and R4 each represent a hydrogen atom and that R1 and R2 identical or different each represent , a hydrogen atom or an alkyl radical preferably having from 1 to 4 carbon atoms. This xanthine, optionally incorporated into liposomes, is used for the preparation of a cosmetic or pharmaceutical composition, in particular a dermatological composition for the pigmentation of the skin or the hair or for strengthening the natural defenses of the skin against solar radiation. |
