titleOfInvention | Laser having coupled optical waveguides |
abstract | Lasers, particularly solid-state lasers such as neodymium on lithium niobate crystal lasers, are described. A structure is provided having several optical waveguides (12) placed side by side and close enough to be laterally coupled. To take into account the possible divergence of refractive indices or the dimensional inaccuracies which may alter the distribution of the electromagnetic field of the coupled structure's propagation supermode, the value of the propagation index of each guide is individually, in principle electrically, controlled. The result of this individually controlled index variation is phase shifts in the laser wave among the various guides, and these phase shifts react upon the composition of electromagnetic fields defining the supermode. This electrical control may even be used to alter the directivity of the laser beam, and is preferably carried out by electrodes (14) placed near each guide. The guides are made of an electro-optical material such as lithium niobate, and neodymium doping, for example, allows the laser effect to appear even within said guides. |
