abstract Protein microspheres are formed by phase separation in a non-solvent, followed by removal of the solvent. Preferred proteins are prolamins, such as zein, which are hydrophobic, biodegradable, and can be modified by proteolysis or chemically to acquire desirable properties, such as a selected rate of degradation. Composite microspheres can be prepared from a mixture of proteins or from a mixture of proteins with one or more bioerodible materials, such as polylactides. Protein coatings can also be produced by this process and compounds can be readily incorporated into the microspheres for later release. The process does not use agents that cause the breakdown of most labile proteins. These microspheres are available in a wide range of sizes and applications, including drug delivery and the delayed release of pesticides, fertilizers and environmental cleaners. Dimensions within a range of less than five microns and the mode of administration of the microspheres can be selected to direct the microparticles to cells in the reticuloendothelial system, or to the mucous membranes of the mouth or gastrointestinal tract. It is also possible to use larger implants composed of these microspheres, in particular for agricultural applications.
