Fluorocarbon emulsions comprising amino acids as well as substances associated with amino acids, such as substituted amino acids or amphoteric groups of amino acid side chains, for example, the imidazolyl group of histidine. Emulsion formulations comprising imidazole and imidazole-based groups have anti-inflammatory and anti-pyretic properties counteracting the transient inflammatory responses occurring when these emulsions are administered in vivo. The lipid constituents of histidine-containing emulsions are protected against oxidation caused by the formation of free radicals. The invention also relates to formulations of buffered emulsions using amino acids comprising histidine, imidazole, as well as associated compounds having a buffering capacity sufficient to maintain the pH of the emulsions within a specified range, under storage conditions, and in order to protect these emulsions from endogenous acid production. The invention also relates to a calculation method helping to select an optimal composition and concentration of buffers, in order to maintain the physiological compatibility and stability of the emulsions within selected pH limits. |
