The invention relates to odorless and stable preservative compositions comprising film-forming proteins containing reducing agents and optionally at least one component selected from the following: reactive zinc salts, cationic polymers and cationic surfactants or non-ionic. The present invention also relates to these compositions which contain oxidizing agents and / or antioxidants, and the methods of use. The therapeutic compositions and methods of the present invention are particularly effective in promoting the healing of wounds, and preventing certain skin problems, including eczema and seborrhea, scleroderma, hanging nails, wrinkles and acne, including scars from acne. The therapeutic compositions and methods of the present invention have also been found to be effective as a veterinary tool for reducing the debilitation associated with certain skin problems in mammals including eczematiform dermatitis, chronic dermatitis, exuberant equine granuloma ('' pulpit exuberant ''), bedsores and, canine cutaneous granulomas (`` licking '' granuloma). The compositions of the present invention are also useful for conditioning horny and keratinous tissues of mammals such as hair and nails, and the legs and coat of animals to improve their resistance and appearance.
