Described herein is a method for the treatment of flue gas. In this method, flue gas containing CO₂ gas and SOx gas is brought into contact with an absorbent containing an alkaline earth metal compound, whereby the gases are both recovered as the carbonate and the sulfite of the alkaline earth metal, respectively. Further, the CO₂ gas produced from the decomposition of the carbonate can be reduced with hydrogen, whereby a CO₂ reduction product such as a hydrocarbon or an oxygen-containing hydrocarbon is formed to achieve the recycling of the CO₂. A system suitable for use in practicing the method is also described. |
