abstract | The described apparatus and method use a variety of units, such as Laplacian filters (6), rank value filters (4), edge detectors (28), gain units (8) and summation units (10), for transforming a digitized input signal (2) of an image, the transformation being performed for each pixel separately. The various elements are combined to produce a variety of desired visual effects, such as a brushstroke effect, contour underlining or the appearance of a reflective chrome surface. An apparatus is further provided, in which a conditioning unit generates a conditioning function, which allows different parts of an image to be combined according to different methods. One thus obtains a reinforcement of the contours of a foreground of an image, while adding in the background a texture in brush strokes. |
