titleOfInvention A hybrid feature-based and template matching based optical character recognition system and method
abstract A characteristic-based character recognition identification and reliability level is determined for an unknown symbol. If the confidence level is within an intermediate range, the characteristics-based identification is confirmed by matching the unknown character to a reference template corresponding to the characteristics-based identification. If the confidence level is less than the middle range, pattern matching character recognition replaces feature-based identification. If the pattern match recognition identifies more than one symbol, matching patterns from a second set of patterns with thicker character lines are used to resolve the ambiguity.
