titleOfInvention | Treatment and prevention of oral mucositis with growth factors |
abstract | The present invention has established that growth factors have the power to rapidly accelerate the healing of inflammations of the oral mucosa produced by chemotherapy and radiotherapy in mammals, in particular in the oral cavity. By the term "growth factor" is meant herein a biologically active polypeptide which causes cell proliferation and which includes both growth factors and their analogs. Included in these factors are epidermal growth factor, transforming growth factors, nerve growth factor, acid and basic fibroblast growth factor and angiogenesis factor, platelet-derived growth factor, growth factors insulin and insulin-like drugs, such as somatomedins, myxomas and growth factors derived from vaccinia virus. This invention more specifically uses growth factors which bind to receptors for epidermal growth factors, these growth factors containing six essential cysteine residues, the spacing of which is defined by the structure -Cys- (AA) a -Cys (AA) b -Cys (AA) c -Cys-AA-Cys- (AA) d -Cys-, where AA represents an amino acid residue, a is equal to 7, b is equal to 4 or 5, c is equal to 10 and d is equal to 8. The present invention relates even more specifically to the use of the transforming growth factor alpha (TGF-alpha) for the prevention and treatment of inflammations of the oral mucosa. |
