abstract The invention relates to a solution-fed slurry polymerization process for the production of maleic anhydride copolymers and an alkyl vinyl ether in a predetermined viscosity range. The process of the invention is characterized by the preloading of an excess of alkyl vinyl ether in a reactor, the supply of maleic anhydride dissolved in a minimum quantity of an organic solvent, inside of the precharged reactor, and the polymerization of the monomers in the presence of a free radical excitant. The copolymer product then appears as a pumpable slurry in the reaction medium. Said slurry is discharged from said reactor and the desired copolymer is obtained therefrom in the form of a fine white powder having viscosities in the range from about 1.5 to 6.0, and preferably about 2.6 to 3.5.
